As a Director at Digital Balance Pty Ltd., one of our directors brings a wealth of interdisciplinary expertise, merging decades of academic rigor, industry-driven research, and technological innovation. He is a Pan Africanist and advocate for digital sustainable solutions across Africa. With a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Fort Hare and over two decades of leadership in ICT education and research across Southern Africa, our director is a Professor in Computer Science and embodies the core ethos of Digital Balance—bridging the gap between emerging technologies and community-centered impact. As an innovator with over 20 years of experience in digital solutions, it is now time to establish Digital Balance.

The Director’s professional journey has consistently aligned with Digital Balance’s mission to deliver intelligent, sustainable, and user-centered digital solutions across Health, Education, Agriculture, and Governance. His extensive experience as a Professor, ICT researcher, and Head of Department at several reputable universities including Walter Sisulu University and the Namibia University of Science and Technology, positions him as a thought leader in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, e-Governance, Human-Computer Interaction, and ICT for Development (ICT4D).

His over 2 decades experience has encouraged the formalisation of Digital Balance and builds up from the different projects and work that has been accomplished from different entities.

In line with Digital Balance’s commitment to Smart AI-Driven Health, the first director has led numerous community-based research projects focused on digital health innovations, such as the development of mobile applications for health data systems and the implementation of health information portals. His recent project with the South African Medical Research Council to build a smart digital patient records portal in the Eastern Cape exemplifies his contribution to enhancing public health through AI and data-driven systems. This is also supported by his contribution towards the AI solution for the Global South with Pan African Information Communication Technology Association (PAICTA), Namibia University of Science and Technology and Makerere University. He has passion for electronic health solutions and telemedicine solutions across Africa.

In the Smart Education domain, our director has not only designed and delivered courses on intelligent systems, project management, and software development but has also supervised over 50 postgraduate students across Masters and PhD levels. His research and consultancy work focus on digital education platforms, online learning ecosystems, and inclusive access for rural learners, aligning with Digital Balance’s goal of making education accessible through adaptive AI-powered tools and offline-first technologies. The introduction of Smart solutions (epaper) with private organisation and the Aalto University in Finland supports the first director’s vision on smart education.

The 1st director also contributes to Smart Agriculture through projects like the development of an online agriculture database for the Eastern Cape and collaborative work on AI-driven solutions for small-scale beekeeping. These initiatives directly support Digital Balance’s goals in digital agriculture, including IoT-enabled crop monitoring and precision farming.

In the realm of Smart Governance, our director has served as a technical advisor for several government and municipal digital transformation initiatives, including ICT policy formulation, e-participation systems, and ISO27001-aligned ICT governance frameworks. He is TOGAF and SAP certified. His experience with agencies like the Benguela Current Commission and various South African municipalities strengthens Digital Balance’s strategic positioning in digital governance and secure public service platforms.

The first Director’s career is marked by research-driven innovation, with more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, a book on digital inequality, multiple book chapters on digital transformation, and active participation in international conferences. His ability to connect academic insight with practical implementation makes him a driving force behind Digital Balance’s success in delivering real-world digital solutions that are inclusive, ethical, and transformative.

With our director at the helm, Digital Balance continues to deliver on its promise—crafting technology solutions that are not only intelligent but are also human-centered, contextually aware, and designed to create lasting social impact.

Systems Migration and Integration

Project 1

Led in transforming a legacy system based on flat file DBMS and manual data processing to an automated Oracle-based system. This was in a live production environment with distributed sites. The original operational mode included separate batches being delivered from the sites for manual capture into the central server systems. The resultant system comprised an automated and networked system of branch sites feeding into a central server system. This resulted in improved revenue assurance as leakages due to process flaws and fraudulent activities were minimised.

Project 2

Led in the integration of two sets of network infrastructure during the merging of operations by two Internet Service Providers. One provider was providing Internet Access Services based on optical fibre whilst the second provider was using radio Base Transceiver Stations. Customers were given a consistent experience regardless of the access technology in use as the systems were seamlessly integrated in an MPLS cloud.

Development and Deployment of New Solutions

The director was the Chief Architect of an innovative educational solution which is currently being deployed in Zimbabwean primary schools. The system is proving to be an invaluable asset to pupils preparing for their Grade 7 examinations. The framework is extendable to other levels of education as content can be loaded in accordance to user preference. System is deployable on offline workstations and servers as well as online servers and mobile devices thus delivering unparalleled flexibility for the market.

Skills Transfer and Training

The director has been extensively involved in tutoring of college students throughout years of engagement with various organisations. This has empowered him to be a reliable interface between academy and industry. In addition, he has also been directly involved in delivering professional training services to students seeking technical certifications both as a member of an organisation and as a solo player

Business Acumen

The director has been working in areas that have a direct impact on business continuity, in the process learning invaluable lessons relating to business dynamics and governance. His endeavours has seen him work and grow professionally in an environment of evolving technological infrastructure, from PSTN driven networks to mature IP networks. In the process he has learnt to build and support scalable and sustainable solutions in the technological as well as socio-economic realms.
